TRAVEL TIPS TO CHEAP VACATION EXTRAORDINARY EXTRAMADURA SPAIN

Travel Tips to Cheap Vacation, Extraordinary Extramadura Spain

A traveler always passed by Extamadura going to Portugal. This place is seen as something – uninteresting by some. Perhaps they just lack the time to uncover and unwrap the gifts that Extramadura travel can bring to them.

There are three towns that you should acquaint yourself when you are in your Extamdura travel. These are Caceres, Merida, and Trujillo. Caceres’s highlight is the ciudad Monumental. The Romans legacy and ruins is what made Merida a shining jewel. Francisco Pizarro is very popular in Trujillo, the third town in Extramdura.

Caceres is a good town to start viewing old palatial houses, churches and squares. Yet, it was Merida’s treasure of roman ruins that took my heart away. I learned that it was once the largest and beautiful Roman city on the whole of Iberian Peninsula.

The church of Saint Eulalia, Alcazba and various museums collecting the relics and evidence from the past of the Romans and Visigoth are only some of the attractions in Merida.

Nightlife in Extramadura is also sizzling like in any other Spanish City. One good bar is the Taxi in Zafra. Do not be discourage by it shabby look. Once you get the feel of the bar, you will just love it. Tourists really do not go so far in this place but it was the best; the food is great and worth tasting.

Francisco Pizarro was one great conquistador in Extamadura. Following its footstep and century old career is very satisfying. Even a tourist who is not a historical buff would love to hear how one extraordinary boy became great and remembered in history.

For those who love to stay a while and would like to get to know Extramadura; they do not worry for Extramdura accommodations are just great for a globe trotter and experienced traveler.

MADRID A MUST- SEE CITY IN SPAIN

Madrid, a Must-See City in Spain

Madrid is always a dream destination for many. The seat of the Spanish government is located in this city; it is referred to as the sunshine capital of Spain and perhaps rightfully referred to as the city that never sleeps and a gateway to Spain and the rest of the Spanish country.

Madrid of course has some of the finest accommodation that you can pick from. Hotelius indeed has some good one up its sleeves for those who are looking for a comfortable place to stay while on Madrid. Great Hotel Espahotel was rejuvenated in 1995 and situated right in the middle of the Great one via.

I spent exactly 72 hours in Madrid and only enjoyed Great Hotel Espahotel and the surrounding attractions and establishment which are very near the hotel. That is my only glimpse of this Spanish city. Yet, the stay in Great Hotel Espahotel compensated for my loss. The hotel was really good and the staff was accommodating and friendly.

I got to see the Coliseum theatre, Greater Place, Theatre Lope de Vega, Real Palace, Great theatre Via 66, Great via, Monastery and Movistar Theater. Though attractions such as puerta del sol, plaza mayor Madrid, el escorial and royal palace Madrid would be lovely to visit and to my dismay our schedule is far to full for such exquisite places.

One thing though that never disappoints us is the city right after the sun has sunk down. It is bathe with a different plumage that attracts those who love to bask in the moonlight and drink sangria. Yet, grupomatarromera wines are the best! It added a new flavor to our evenings. Our evenings were spent dancing with the nearest discotheque and we made sure that a wine from grupomataroomera is ordered for the group to enjoy.

Our stay in Madrid was the best and well-remembered.

TENERIFE IS SPAIN TOP TRAVEL DESTINATION

Tenerife is Spain Top Travel Destination

It was in our Tenerife travel that I had my taste of real vacation. I have to be honest that I am no beach bum but in Tenerife you just can not resist the water and the views. I visited my aunt living in Tenerife for a few weeks and it was the best time of my life. Getting the best of you Tenerife Holiday means staying for a few days and trying to savor what it has to offer.

My first stop is getting to Mount Teide, the 3rd largest volcano in the whole world and the highest elevation in Spain. The cable car trip really scared me at first yet as time passes the fear slowly ebbs away as I admire the scenic view below and ahead of me. Talks of climbing Mount Teide encourage us and we set a late date to do that. After our cable car experience we went to different tourist spots in the place. After three days of preparation, well, contacting friends and companions for the climb we head to conquer Mount Teide. Yeah, I am just exaggerating on conquering all of Mount Teide; we just went a little higher than the plains below the mountain and scourge the area for a better view and that’s it. But it was the best ever in my life. The cable car is a sensible way of going up to Mount Teide but if you are challenge and adventure perhaps you will take the route from the bottom though.

After spending a day and one night in Mount Teide we went next to Masca after a day of resting. It was another day of walking but this time with another pleasure of seeing a beautifully set village. Icod de los Vinos is another divinely set town. I had also fallen in love with La Gomera.

Tenerife is indeed a paradise to me.

HOW TO COMPLAIN EFFECTIVELY

10 Ocak 2010 Pazar

How to Complain Effectively
Get Upgraded, Not Degraded

Your room doesn't look a thing like it did on the hotel's website. It's more like a broom closet than an elegant suite. You've booked two expensive business class seats for your 10th anniversary trip and neither one reclines. "We're very sorry, there are no other seats available," you are told firmly and finally. Do you just sit there and take it?

No way, says Suzanne Fletcher, President and CEO of the National Business Travel Association. "First take a deep breath," Fletcher advises.

"Remember the old 'count to ten' trick from elementary school? It works. Taking a moment to compose yourself will help you remember that this one trip is not the single most important thing in the world. And that will allow you to approach a discussion more calmly and politely."

Then what?

1. When you need to complain, do so as soon as possible. It's best to get the situation rectified on the spot, if possible, rather than having to complain after the fact.

2. Be calm and polite, direct and firm. Like you, airline, hotel, and car rental employees face myriad challenges every day. If you approach them politely and explain your frustration clearly, they are much more likely to be inclined to help you.

3. Understand that airline rules are complicated. Experts often tell travelers to "know the rules" before complaining, but for many airline passengers following that advice would mean never complaining. Your best bet is to know the restrictions associated with your ticket to the extent possible (for example, is it a refundable ticket?), and beyond that to realize that the airline may or may not be required to rectify the situation you face.

4. If you're getting nowhere, talk to someone else. Sometimes talking to the right person can make all the difference. If you're not making any progress, get back in line and speak with a different agent, or ask to speak with a manager or station manager.

5. Use your cell phone. The time you spend waiting in a long line of people can double as time on-hold at the call center. You may get through on the phone before you get the front of the physical line.

6. Know what you are complaining about and what you want. It sounds simple, but sometimes people get so frustrated they don't clearly explain the problem or what they hope to accomplish by complaining. Starting your conversation with those points will give you a better chance of success.

7. Respect security personnel and know current security standards. Showing frustration with security screeners will not help you get to your destination any faster, nor is it likely to change operations at the checkpoint. The best things you can do to help make their jobs easier and your security experience smoother is to know and follow current screening rules, and give yourself plenty of time to get through the line.

8. Your travel department or travel agency is your lifeline. When the hotel doesn't have the room you reserved; the rental car is the wrong size vehicle; or your flight is cancelled, and the line at the airline counter is so long after that you know you'll never get on the next one -- your travel agency can often help you. Carry the phone number with you and, if there is one, the after-hours number for help in these difficult situations.

Finally, Sam Haigh, President and CEO of Benchmark Hospitality International advises travelers to "always follow up in writing -- even if the issue was solved to your satisfaction."

"This gives the property or airline additional input upon which to follow up with you. Hotels and airlines pay a lot of attention to written comments, good and bad. Include names and other specifics."

UNUSUAL DUTY FREE DEALS

Unusual Duty-Free Deals
Getting the Best for Less Around the World

Shop-a-holics unite! You have nothing to lose by buying duty-free but local and national taxes (though you'll still have to pay customs fees on articles over $800).

The first duty-free liquor counter was opened at London Airport in 1959. Since then, travelers have counted on doing their last-minute shopping at the increasingly mall-like duty-free centers in airports around the world. But how can you get the most from duty-free? Start by comparing prices using a duty-free guide, which will tell you if that bottle of new Armani cologne is going to be cheaper at Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam, than at a store back home.

You can also go armed with some little-known facts. For example, the Vatican is an entirely duty-free zone, so it's heaven for travelers with a yen for religious art and artifacts. Certain buildings in the UN complex in New York, which is governed by its own laws and not strictly part of the US, offer duty-free shops in their lobbies (you have to present identification to shop, but busy shop-hands tend not to ask.)

Today's security restrictions on liquids mean that some airports will permit you to buy a small amount of liquors or perfumes and pick them up at the entrance to your flight, though regulations are very much in flux. US to UK flights have stricter rules, and all liquids must be sent through security. Apart from liquids and liquors, travelers can pick up a myriad of other last-minute bargains in duty-free shops worldwide.

Global Best Bets Guide
Tokyo
A wealth of Hello Kitty merchandise not offered in the US is on sale in Tokyo's duty-free shops. World famous Japanese brands of makeup are another draw, and you can find products (like some skin whiteners) that are not sold in the United States or Europe.

London
The British Museum Shop, at Heathrow Airport, offers beautiful reproductions of some of the museum's most popular art and artifacts. Buy here, rather than in the museum shop in town, and avoid V.A.T. taxes, which can be steep. Stanstead's Glorious Britain shop will warm the cockles of any royalist's heart. Visitors can purchase mugs, t-shirts and other paraphernalia all emblazoned with various images of royalty on them.

Venice
Marco Polo Airport has recently been renovated, with lots more room for last-minute shopping. Glass, of course, is everywhere. However, the small shop Venetia Studium is worth a look for reproductions of Venetian velvet scarves and clothes copied from the famous Italian turn-of-the-century designer, Mario Fortuny.

Bangkok
Here travelers to Thailand will have their last chance to shop at Jim Thompson Thai Silk Company. The ubiquitous shops are famous for their traditionally made fabrics. Available in hues the full range of the rainbow, Jim Thompson silk is popular with fashion designers and interior decorators the world over.

Montreal
The duty-free shops at this airport sell maple syrup -- and lots of it. Not only does the sappy stuff come in the form of syrup, you can get it in candles, soaps and sweets, too. In the US, real maple syrup (not the kind you get in the supermarket) is hard-to-find and expensive. Next time you're north of the border, stock up.

Mexico
White Mexican wedding skirts, skeleton dioramas for the Day of the Dead, canned moles and sealed jars of spicy sauces are all great buys at Mexico's airport duty-free shops. And just in case you forgot to pick 1 up during your trip to Cancun, you can get Apocalypto-style Mayan pyramids in the form of pencil sharpeners, paperweights and other less-than-useful but very decorative guises.

STAY HEALTHY ON THE ROAD

Stay Healthy on the Road
Tips for an Illness-Free Vacation

You've heard the horror stories. So-and-so in accounting took a safari vacation in Africa and came back with malaria. Your neighbor's best friend had a heart attack climbing his first mountain. Your favorite hairdresser threw up for 10 days after coming back from a trek through the Amazon.

Your quest for adventure and your personal health need not be in conflict. This checklist will help ensure that wellness and wanderlust go hand-in-hand on your next vacation.

1. Check with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention for health warnings and information about the area where you'll be traveling.

2. Make an appointment for any vaccinations well in advance of departure. This allows your physician to monitor possible allergic reactions and time to recover from any soreness, fever or fatigue.

3. Make sure all your prescriptions are up to date. If you can, acquire original prescriptions or explanatory notes from the doctors who gave them to you and keep them in the same container. Some countries question prescription medications at the border and you want to have proof that your medications are medically necessary.

4. If you are going on a physically strenuous vacation, make sure your body is up to it. Go to your local gym and get in shape months before leaving -- not weeks. Get a fitness checkup from your personal physician and a green light for the activities planned, even if your tour operator or travel planner does not require it.

5. When planning your trip with your physician, be fully up front with him or her. For instance, if you have a family history of mental illness, your doctor may recommend against taking certain anti-malarial medications.

6. Don't ignore dental health. "If you can't find potable water with which to brush your teeth in flight or on the road, at least floss," says New York dentist, Dr. Michael Margolis. Make sure your crowns and dental work are secure. Easily available dental services in developing countries may not be up to standard.

7. Take out a valid travel health care plan. Some countries actually require visitors to show proof of this on arrival, at least on paper. If you are going to a country with developing resources, ask about airlift or evacuation services.

8. Bring a first aid kit with bandages, anti-bacterial cream and plenty of antihistamines. You might not know that you're allergic to certain foreign plants or insects until it's too late.

9. Don't forget lots of sunscreen -- wherever you travel. The risk of skin cancer never goes on vacation.

TRAVEL TIPS FOR WOMEN

Travel Tips for Women
Safely Experience The Freedom of the Lone Female

In 2007, a staggering 32 million American women traveled independently and as this trend of single-woman travel grows, both online and traditional travel industries are rushing to meet demand. Airlines, travel websites and tour operators are wising up and catering to this dynamic demographic -- welcome news for the adventurous female.

Though women still need to take the necessary precautions and be aware of cultural norms when traveling abroad, there are great perks to hitting the road alone. Traveling solo offers approachability, enabling one to meet more people than if she were traveling with a group, and giving her a unique window into the lives of the host culture.

Below are tips to make the solo travel experience a safer and more satisfying one.

Before You Go
Before you hop on a plane and head to your destination, learn about the geographical and historical lie of the land, read up on the country's artistic and cultural events and practice some key local phrases to make your trip richer. Don't forget to research some of the cultural norms and prevailing belief systems, specifically those that pertain to women.

When packing your bags, remember that less is best. Traveling with minimal gear not only increases your economy of movement, but also decreases your chances of becoming a target for thieves or pickpockets.

It has never been easier to find expert advice on travel, particularly by travelers in the know. A great way to find out more about your destination is to get the inside scoop from other women travelers who have been there. There are travel sites online that regularly feature seasoned travel writers and travel bloggers, including WorldHum.

When You Arrive
It is wise to check in with the consulate once you arrive at your destination. As a safety precaution, you may need to be contacted by your country's consulate in the event of an emergency, or if your family has to be notified of your whereabouts.

As a woman traveling alone, insurance may come in the form of a cell phone. Though you should rely far more on your intuition than a cell phone in the event of a dicey situation, knowing that you can call ahead to secure a hotel room or contact a friend can be extremely helpful. If you plan on being in a country for some time, having an unlocked GSM cell phone with a local, prepaid SIM card is a great option.

If you plan on getting cash or staying in remote areas for extended periods of time, a money belt is indispensable. Remember that timing is everything: as a single woman traveler, going to an ATM in the middle of the night can be unsafe. Ensure that you have enough cash not only to get from point A to point B, but enough to last for as long as you plan to stay.

If you are going to be walking around a city or town, write down the name of your hotel and note landmarks. When taking a taxi, always try to get the taxi number or license plate before you head off in case you encounter any trouble along the way. Agreeing on the fare beforehand and having the exact change will prevent you from getting overcharged. Avoid traveling alone at night in a taxi unless absolutely necessary.

Traveling solo can be a liberating experience, and keeping your friends and relatives abreast of your travels is a great way to assuage any bouts of loneliness. Blogging about your experiences is a great way to share your trip with those that cannot join you.

Staying Safe
If you're traveling alone, choosing a busy hotel in a central part of town is a great option. Not only will it make you less conspicuous, you'll have the opportunity to meet other travelers passing through.

When you're on the move, try to travel during the daytime, or time your trip so that you will arrive in the morning. The stress of arriving in an unfamiliar place in a foreign country is only exacerbated at night.

Projecting a confident attitude and walking with intent is 1 of the best ways to stay safe and avoid hassle. Even if you are unsure of your destination, people intuitively bother you less if you appear to be going somewhere. How you carry yourself, and the confidence you project, speaks volumes to passersby.

Ultimately, as a solo woman traveler out in the world, no matter where you land or how you arrive, keep in mind some basic truths: your wits are your friends, intuition is your guide and adventure is yours for the taking.

TAX DEDUCTIBLE VACATIONS

Tax-Deductible Vacations
How to Find Voluntourism Opportunities

We all know that with a little finesse, a business trip can include a bit of pleasure on the side and have a tax benefit, to boot. But are any other "vacations" good for taxation as well as relaxation? If you're willing to roll up your sleeves and do a little "voluntourism," they might be.

"There's been a substantial increase in the number of consumers and travel companies that are donating financial resources, time, talent and economic patronage to protect and positively impact the cultures and environments they visit ," says Brian T. Mullis, president of Sustainable Travel International. "Participatory philanthropy in the form of voluntourism opportunities, in particular, is really growing in popularity, since more and more individuals want to feel a sense of purpose in connection with their leisure activities."

Mullis points out that programs operated by nonprofit organizations often include a tax benefit for travelers. "The ones that are not operated by nonprofit organizations do not," he says.

In either case, opportunities for doing good while traveling are growing. New York-based Cross Cultural Solutions, with centers in 10 countries, expects to send at least 1,500 volunteers to destinations around the globe this year - nearly double the 854 who participated in its programs a year ago, says executive director Steve Rosenthal. Minnesota-based Global Volunteers plans to send nearly 1,700 travelers on volunteer vacations next year. They have recently added new trips to Australia and South America, to keep up with demand.

Travelers can expect to pay a basic fee for food and lodging (usually about $200 to $1,000 a week), plus airfare to and from the country where they'll be working. Those seeking a tax benefit should look at nonprofit organizations alone, and check with each on the individual tax benefits of each volunteer vacation.

When researching your own voluntourism experience, keep in mind:

1. Not all experiences are fully tax deductible. Check on the status of each vacation individually with the organization involved and with umbrella organizations like Volunteer International.

2. The amount of time you spend touring or doing other non-volunteer activities may affect the tax-benefit status of your journey.

3. Not all voluntour experiences must be had abroad. New Orleans, for example, offers a gamut of voluntour possibilities in the form of Hurricane Katrina rebuilding. Check out the Habitat for Humanity site for more information.

4. Be realistic about the amount of time and skill you have to offer. Don't sign up to rebuild homes if you don't have the energy or time to commit yourself fully to the project; give a tax-deductible donation to the organization instead.

But with a little help from the Transportation Security Administration (T.S.A.) and two top New York stylists, you can arrive in style with nothing but small containers of liquid in a clear plastic bag and a little imagination.

"You can bring up to 3 oz. of liquids on board if you place them in one, 1-quart clear plastic bag," says the T.S.A.'s Ann Richards. "There's no limit to how many 3-oz. containers you want to bring as long as they all fit in only one, 1-quart bag that can close with the products inside. Every other liquid must go in your checked baggage."

Makeup-wise, what's allowed? "Lipsticks, not glosses, pencils, caked mascara or powders are all allowed," says Richards. "If you're a frequent traveler, you should invest in some travel-sized grooming items. They are now usually packed in 3-oz. tester-sized containers."

Landy Dean, makeup artist, and Edris Nicholls, founder and hairstylist, both of the tony New York Edris Salon (Iman and Naomi Campbell are fans) have 10 other tips for getting off your next flight looking as if you deserve a vacation rather than need one:

1. Tie your hair in a scarf to combat bad hair at the end of a long flight -- make it a Hermes to add extra glamour.

2. Hair powder, like a dry shampoo, helps combat oily scalp or limp hair.

3. Leave your house with a leave-in conditioner in your hair. Wrap it in a scarf, and you'll get a deep-conditioning treatment while you earn the miles -- excellent for combating the overly dry air on board

4. As always, carry a great hairbrush. They like the junior Maison & Pearson.

5. Don't forget hair shine paper. It helps eliminate static and reduce dullness.

6. Cucumber eye pads. Pre-moistened pads soothe and refresh tired and puffy eyes. These can also be refrigerated prior to travel to further refresh eyes during flight.

7. Pre-moistened makeup remover cloths remove makeup or just clean the skin mid- or post-travel. Neutrogena or Mac brands are good. (Note: These pre-moistened towelettes must be placed in your one-quart bag of liquids.)

8. Makeup corrector sticks help correct little smudges, blotches or "I-can't sleep-because-I'm-stuck-in-the-center-aisle" circles under the eyes.

9. Cake mascara is a great alternative when liquids are not allowed. This is the classic Hollywood way to darken and define the eyelashes. It comes in a pressed, cake form and can be mixed with water then applied with a firm brush. They recommend curling the lashes first -- Paula Dorf or Longcils Boncza brands are favorites.

10. Solid cocoa butter and cotton gloves for a hand treatment (also place in one quart travel bag).

And at the end of it all, Edriss and Landy recommend a good night's sleep, a 16-oz. bottle of water and a pair of designer sunglasses so that others will think you're a rock star, not just a fatigued fellow traveler.
