One of the biggest tourist cities in all of Turkey is the city of Marmaris, which lies in the southwest of the country, in the Mugla Province along the Mediterranean coast. This city, steeped in a history that goes back thousands of years, to 3000 BC, when the pyramids were being built, has become a huge tourist city for Turkey. In fact, the biggest business in the city is tourism, with the size of the city swelling to 400,000 people during the tourism season.
Over the course of centuries, the city has gone through many changes. From being ruled by Alexander the Great, the Roman Empire and the Ottoman Empire, and come through it all as an important city in the Mediterranean.
Much of the charm of the city still exists after centuries of building and rebuilding. Even during the 1980s, when the city went through a boom of construction, much of the charm remained.
One of the first things tourists notice about this amazing city and the region around it, is the immense beauty that seems to dominate everything. Some would say, it could be one of the most beautiful regions in the entire Mediterranean.
Not surprisingly, it has seen itself become a hot-spot for sailing, with several marinas dominating the shoreline of the city. It is also a very popular destination for northern Europeans who are trying to escape the cold of the north, for the warmth of the south and the amazing beauty of the region.
Cruise ships are often seen in the area and ferry service is available to Rhodes on a daily basis.
The city, its people, its culture and its history are something to behold, which leaves everyone who visits it breathless and always wanting more.
